Bible
Intro:
- My qualifications to talk about the Next Generation—I am young and old (just found out)
- Psalm 133 talks about how good and pleasant it is for brothers to dwell together in unity
- We don’t think about this generationally
- Thinking about Generational Unity liberates us from PETTY CHURCH ISSUES.
Esther:
- Biblical soap opera
- Murder plots, romance, twists, turns, etc.
- Characters:
- Xerxes – does what he wants, has tons of power to do so
- Mordecai – faithful to God, honest man, practically raised Esther
- Esther – beautiful young woman, found favor with everyone, listens to Mordecai
- Haman – friend of the king, likes himself, hates Mordecai and everyone like him
- Esther 4:13-17
- Climax of story and here is what we see
- Mordecai brings wisdom, centering, and perspective
- Esther brings bravery and imagination
- Without generational unity, it’s a bad day for the people of God
- Mordecai without Esther and Esther without Mordecai are equally powerless
- Climax of story and here is what we see
How do we cultivate Generational Unity?
- Mordecais Give:
- Time (doesn’t have to be full-on mentorship programs, but pray about what time you can give)
- Trust (look at our sound booth—and look for more!)
- Truth (Jacob Sheriff—we were drawn to truth from a young age)
- Esthers Give:
- Time (this is a two-way street! Make time for someone to sow into your life)
- Trust (Esther trusted Mordecai, even when it seemed like she had it figured out. She knew he had wisdom)
- Truth
Last Guiding Principle
- James 3:18
- “A harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.”
